Karwar Beach Rock Garden - some images -1

A rock garden, created on Ravindranath Tagore beach in Karwar city at a cost of Rs.2.60 crore, was inaugurated recently. 

It showcases the rural life of Karwar and Uttar Kannada (North Kanara) District.

This Wireless UHF Tower of the Port department was converted into a view tower, from which tourist can view the islands and ship movements.

Sorting the catch....

Fishing at the Breakwater

Enjoying a respite fromthe severe Monsoons, I took a Break to visit the Breakwater, and there this boy was patiently waiting for a fish to eat his bait....

The monsoons have made the Arabian Sea Waters look muddy, and the waves seemed to have calmed down a bit, after devouring metres of shorelines all around Karwar and causing massive erosion...

Just in Time

Early morning, before the sunrise, is always a Good time for fishing in the Backwaters in Kadwad-Sunkeri, and these fishermen are just doing that...

Got this picture just in time, as the lead weights of the Spiral Fishing Net was hitting the surface of the super-calm water surface....

Oh wish I had a better camera, I would have captured the lead weights of the fishing-net hitting the water surface.....

The Ro-Ro service of the Konkan Railway fromMumbai-Panvel to Ernakulam in Kerala, was started bt the Konkan Railway, a first in India, and it has met with great success, with increased earnings for the Railway Corporation. In the total span of 9 years, the corporation has earned more than INR.90Crores only from the Ro-Ro service..

A lone Fisherman, walks on the shore, gazing at the Sea looking for the signs of movement/location of shoals of Fish....

In Karwar, fishermen still rely on the Intuitive traditional and conservative method of locating the Areas for fishing in the sea. Some of the fishermen have,by trial and error, honed their skills in this department, and such fishermen are very rare, and are in great demand by the Fishing Boat owners.
Locating the Fish is of substantial importance, to save on time, fuel and effort, and to make better profits in the market, for which such "experts" are needed. But these fishermen are now beaten in the game of Survival, by the big MNC trawlers that have the new navigational and GPS devices.

Pathway across the River. - February 2009 Theme

I found and captured this foot bridge at Amdalli Fishing port. Its essentially a fishing bridge with wooden planks to block the water from moving out during the low-tide, to catch/trap the Fish that had moved in during the High tide.

"Fishing" Holiday....

Beginning from the second week of June, mechanical fishing is banned till mid-August. To the fishermen, it means a two-month long ' forced vacation'. Along the 350 km Karnataka coastline (starting from Sadashivgarh in Karwar to Talpadi in Mangalore), around 9,000 Persin trawlers and around 20,000 conventional (country) boats fish in the more than 10 fishing ports maybe around 40,000 are parked.
The declining fish population, in spite of the annual ban, remains a mystery. The fish population is diminishing at an annual rate of 25 per cent, say official sources.
