Sister City Theme - Goa - Church of Imaculate Conception in Panjim

Church of the Imaculate Conception(Iglesia de la Concepcion Inmaculada), Panjim, Goa

Posted by Picasa

This was one of the first to be built in Goa, by 1541. The early church was completely re-built from its foundations in 1619 and this was even considered, taking account of the still negligible population of the area and the size of the new church, is a striking commentary on the religious climate of the time and the wealth available to the churches.

Video of Galgibagh / Turtle Beach.... and a nice Article....
TURTLE BEACH: The 1.5- km Galgibaga has become the latest nesting haven for turtles, following the Morjim beach in North Goa. Within five days, nearly 200 baby turtles were hatched and found their way back into the sea from two nests. Fr Mariano Goes-Proenca, the Galjibaga parish priest and protector of turtles was told buy a villager, "We had eaten the eggs but never seen this in our life time," watching the spectacle of baby turtles returning to the sea at the Galjibaga beach at 8.30 am.

Sister City Theme - Goa - Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa

Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa

This is the most revered and famous of all the churches in Old Goa. It contains the relics of St. Francis Xavier, Patron saint of Goa, Apostle of the Indies and for most Goans " Goencho Saib ". Its construction was begun on the 24th November 1594 out of the funds bequeathed for the purposes by Dom Jeronimos Mascarenhas and was consecrated by the Archbishop Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes, on the 15th of May 1605. In 1946 it became the first church in India to be elevated to the status of a minor basilica.

The three storey facade facing west that is a combination of Doric, Corinthian and composite style architecture. It is built of black laterite stone and is 78 1/2 feet high and 75 3/5 feet broad. Its facade may be divided into four parts; the lowest containing three elegant portals, the part immediately above having three large windows corresponding to the three portals, the third part above with the three circular windows and the fourth part that forms a quadrangle richly embellished with arabesques. All these portions are adorned with pillars and carvings. The pillars and detail are carved from basalt brought in from Bassein, another Portuguese enclave north of Goa. For more Info click here....

Theme Day - Sister City - Goa

I have chosen entire
Goa
as the "sister City" of my hometown Karwar, cos its just 15 kilometers from Karwar, and i have traveled there extensively, and have a lot of pictures... One of them is this....

Name of the Church :-
Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Panaji - Goa, built in 1521 by Franciscan friars, the first group that came to Goa in 1517. Back then it was a chapel. Later, it was modified into a church in 1521 and consecrated to the Holy Spirit on 2nd August, 1602. The church was rebuilt in 1661, but the black stone gate finely carved was retained. The convent reconstructed in 1529 was initially a group of cells built by Friars in the garden for residence purpose. The Government of Portugal closed the convent in 1835. Later in 1964, a museum was set up in the convent and today, it houses a number of artifacts, paintings and sculptors. The double storeyed structure, 230 feet long and 108 ft wide was the residence of Archbishop till 1695, when they moved to Panelim.
The church built of laterite is lime plastered. The doorway is Manueline style and the facade is flanked by octagonal towers on either side. A recess in the wall holds the statue of Our lady of Miracles (transported from Jaffna in Sri Lanka). On the pedestal bearing the sign of Fransiscans stands a wooden statue of St. Francis. The church is open for the public from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm except on Sundays and the museum is open 9 am to 12:30 pm and 3 pm to 6:30 pm.
The convent was turned into an Archaeological Museum for public in 1964. The museum has a rich collection of paintings, artefacts, statues etc. On display are eclectic collection comprising sixty portraits of Portuguese viceroys and governors of Goa. There are statues of Afonso de Albuquerque, Vasco da Gama and St.Catherine (in bronze) from the Viceroy of Arch. Some Hindu deities are also there like Lord Vishnu and a standing statue of Lord Surya (the sun god).
